Hello Team 8-2

I will be out today, March 12th, tending to two sick one-year old boys. I do hope you are all well, and that you are committed to working hard and being respectful. I expect your best behavior and most efficient use of time. The crossword that I have created and the Taboo packet will be helpful as you set out to review for Monday's quiz.

When you are through with your review materials (Taboo & Crossword), I would like to see you interact with a K-W-L on the 1920s. Remember the K-W-L stands for:

* What you Know?
* What you Want to know?
* What you Learned?

I do hope you all have a great weekend! Remember, middle school is fast coming to a close. Let's work as hard as we can in the coming weeks so that the skills necessary for high school success are sharpened.

Classroom Procedures

Please hand out a Taboo packet to each student. These packets can be found on my desk or on the small table in front of my desk. Please inform students that these terms are the BIG ones for Monday’s quiz. Please ask students to take 7 minutes today to review the terms. If comfortable, students may work with a partner to quiz one another. (read taboo terms and ask partner to try to identify the word)

Please hand out WW I Crossword Puzzle. You may allow students to work individually or with a partner. Students may use the “old” textbooks in the back of the room. After 15 minutes, or when all students are nearing completion, please go through the crossword with the students. Answers are below:

Once complete, each student should pick up an “old” textbook from the back of the classroom. Then, please hand out the K-W-L sheet.
Please ask students to open the textbook to the chapter on the 1920s. I believe this is Chapter 24. Utilizing this chapter, ask students to complete the K and W part of the KWL. Feel free to complete the K (What do you KNOW) as a whole-class activity.

What students do not finish of the K-W-L must be finished by Tuesday’s class.

Friday, January 15th

Hello Team 8-2!

I will not be in school today as my son Leo has had his first stomach bug. He is recovering well but must be hydrated throughout the day. I expect only your best behavior and most diligent work for today's substitute. I believe the work I have left is meaningful and will provide a strong overview of the Progressive Era.

Have a great day! I look forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday!

Mr. Keegan

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year to Team 8-2

I will be out today due to a family illness. I do expect your best behavior and most disciplined work today. Remember, the measure of a person is not how they act when all eyes are on him or her, but how he or she acts when nobody is watching.

The work you will do today is designed to preview the Era of Reform, which many people see as a natural response to the excesses of Industrialization. Read carefully, think critically, and ask for help when you need assistance.

SPECIAL NOTES

Students who have not yet presented Time Traveler will be expected to do so tomorrow. I suspect that Mr. Weinstein and I will meet to discuss project grades tomorrow and that we may be able to return graded rubrics by Wednesday or Thursday.

All Industrialization Exams will be returned tomorrow. The grades were excellent! Congratulations and keep up the great work!

On Wednesday we will be participating in a Geography Bee. Two students from each section will advance to a school-wide Bee to be held later in the month.

Hello Team 8-2!

I'll be home sick today but I am hopeful that all plans are followed and all work is completed efficiently. I also expect you to be respectful to the substitute as well as one another.

Today's Procedure

1. Please write homework from the back board
2. Take out homework packet - "Captains of Industry or Robber Barons?

*With substitute, please review all answers and discuss as necessary.

3. Once review is complete, work on packet pages 11 & 12.

4. Note: We will be writing a TDC paragraph in class on Friday. If all of your work is completed, you are strongly encouraged to work on a rough draft. The question will be:

Should the Industrial leaders of the late 1800s be looked at with admiration as Captains of Industry, or should they be viewed with disdain as Robber Barons?

5. If you complete all assignments, you may use the Junior Scholastic library on the back table.

Have a great day! I look forward to returning tomorrow.

Three Cups of Tea Kick-off

Thursday, October 8th - ELA
Friday, October 9th - Social Studies

In Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time , Greg Mortenson, and journalist David Oliver Relin, recount the journey that led Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain, to successfully establish schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. By replacing guns with pencils, rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge of the third-world to promote peace with books, not bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to remote communities in central Asia. Three Cups of Tea is at once an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man really is changing the world—one school at a time.
